A Future Doctor, Saved by a Life-Changing Transplant

Heart–Lung Transplant Surgery Saves Doctor’s Student’s Life, Says Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan

At only 21, and right at the start of his medical career, he was diagnosed with stage 4 heart and lung failure as a result of a rare, progressing cardiopulmonary disease.

She was forced to stop her studies as a medical student as her health started to deteriorate massively. Various drugs and conservative treatments did little to improve her condition and the only possible solution left was a heart and lung transplant.

The transplant was complicated and had high risks, and only one of India’s leading cardiothoracic and transplant surgeons, Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, was considered capable of handling something so complex.

“We felt tremendous pressure when she came to us for treatment,” said Dr. Srinath Vijaysekharan. “She was so young; we felt tremendous responsibility as she still had so much life left to live.”

Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan and his team saved her life - they performed a heart and lung transplant and replaced her failing heart and lungs with new ones in a complex and very demanding procedure. They made sure everything went smoothly and she was back on her feet within only a month.

Today, she is able to walk, dream, and plan for the future. She has managed to survive and will continue to study medicine. Hopefully, one day, she will be able to save someone else’s life too.

Thanks to Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan and his team, another young heart keeps beating - another life was saved due to a heart transplant and a lung transplant.
