Post COVID Patient on ECMO gets Life Saving Lung Transplant by Dr Srinath Vijayasekharan
COVID-19 not only caused damage in the form of the infection but also had long term side effects. In this particular case of the post-COVID patient, his journey of fighting the virus was not over even after recovering from the infection. The deadly virus had completely deteriorated his lung function beyond repair.
Despite being put on high dose oxygen and even on a ventilator, there was no improvement. Finally, he was placed on an advanced form of life support called ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation).
Since his lungs were beyond repair, he was referred to Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, Lung transplant surgeon and one of the best doctors in India for his expertise in post COVID lung injury and management.
“He had lost all his lung functions and was completely dependent on ECMO support, the only definitive treatment available for him was lung transplant” says Dr. Srinath. The patient was finally able to breathe independently after the successful bilateral lung transplantation done by Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan.
“The patient's lungs were beyond repair. I removed the non-functioning lungs and replaced it with healthy functioning lungs”, he added.
The patient was successfully taken off the ECMO and was breathing on his own.
