Breathing Again: A 23-Year-Old Woman's Journey from Oxygen Dependence to a New Life

At just 23 years old, faced a reality that most her age couldn’t imagine. Once vibrant and active, she had become completely dependent on 24-hour oxygen support due to Bilateral Cystic Bronchiectasis. Even walking a few steps felt like a marathon. Every breath was a struggle.

Her condition rapidly worsened, and her lungs could no longer support her life. A lung transplant was her only hope.

She was referred to Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, a pioneer in heart and lung transplants in India, known for taking on high-risk and complex cases with outstanding outcomes.

“She was incredibly young, and her entire life was ahead of her — we had to act fast and give her that chance,” said Dr. Srinath.

The transplant team moved swiftly. With close coordination, a suitable donor was identified, and Dr. Srinath & Dr. Senthil and their team performed a successful bilateral lung transplant.

The change was nothing short of miraculous. From being tethered to an oxygen cylinder, she took her first free breath post-surgery — a moment her family will never forget.

Today, she is living independently, walking freely, and planning her future, one breath at a time.

“From oxygen tubes to open skies — her story reminds us that with timely transplant care, even the most critical cases can have a beautiful second chapter,” said Dr. Srinath.
