Breathing New Life: Successful Lung Transplant at Rela Hospital Gives Patient a Second Chance

In a powerful demonstration of medical excellence and coordinated critical care, Rela Hospital, Chromepet, successfully performed a life-saving lung transplant, offering a new lease of life to a patient suffering from end-stage lung disease.

The patient, 43 yrs old female a mother of two, had been battling chronic respiratory illness for years. Despite prolonged medical management, their condition worsened, leading to severe breathlessness, oxygen dependency, and an extremely limited quality of life. With lungs that had turned fibrotic and non-functional, the patient was left with only one hope—a lung transplant.

Recognizing the complexity and urgency, the patient was referred to Rela Hospital’s Heart and Lung Transplant Program, known for its advanced expertise in high-risk thoracic surgeries.

💉 The Procedure: A Collaborative Surgical Triumph

The lung transplant surgery was successfully carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by:

  • Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, Director and Senior Consultant – Heart and Lung Transplantation

  • Dr. Senthil Kumar D, Clinical Lead and Senior Consultant – Heart and Lung Transplantation

  • Dr. Aishwarya Rajkumar, Clinical Lead – Transplant Pulmonology

The operation lasted several hours and involved intricate coordination among surgeons, anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, intensivists, and perfusionists. The patient received either a single or double lung transplant, depending on their condition, and was closely monitored throughout the procedure.

🛌 Recovery and New Beginnings

Post-transplant, the patient was managed in the Transplant ICU, where the team ensured the new lungs adapted well and that no rejection or infection occurred. The rehabilitation process included respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, and nutritional care.

Within weeks, the patient began to regain strength—walking, breathing unassisted, and living independently for the first time in years. Recent biopsy results confirmed excellent lung function, and the patient is now living a full, active life, supported by regular follow-ups and immunosuppressive therapy.

🫁 A Message of Hope and Awareness

This success story is a testament to Rela Hospital’s commitment to advanced organ transplant care, and it underscores the importance of organ donation in saving lives.

“Lung transplant is not just a surgical procedure—it’s a chance to live again,” said Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan.
“Many patients with end-stage lung disease don’t know this option exists. Through awareness and donor support, we can rewrite the future for many more.”
