Double Lung Transplant at Rela Hospital Breathes New Life into Mother of Two, Averting Heart Failure

In a remarkable feat of modern medicine, Rela Hospital, Chromepet, has given a new lease of life to Ms. Kavitha, a 44-year-old mother of two, by successfully performing a high-risk double lung transplant, thereby averting the need for a heart transplant that had begun to look inevitable.

Ms. Kavitha was battling interstitial lung disease (ILD) — a chronic, progressive condition that causes the lungs to become fibrotic, stiff, and incapable of supporting breathing. Over time, her worsening lung function began to significantly strain her heart, placing her at risk of multi-organ failure.

She had been bedridden and oxygen-dependent for nearly two years, with her quality of life severely diminished. When she was referred to Rela Hospital six months ago, her lungs had already lost most of their elasticity, and her chest cavity had shrunk, complicating the chances of a successful transplant.

A Complex Surgical Milestone

The double lung transplant surgery, which lasted nearly eight hours, was performed by a 30-member multidisciplinary team. The surgery was led by:

  • Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, Director and Senior Consultant – Heart and Lung Transplantation

  • Dr. Aishwarya Rajkumar, Clinical Lead – Transplant Pulmonology

The surgical team included cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, pulmonologists, perfusionists, and transplant coordinators—each playing a crucial role in the complex orchestration of the transplant.

Intensive Recovery and Hope Restored

Post-operative care was equally critical. Although the donor lungs were a perfect match, the patient’s chest cavity—narrowed over six years of illness—required careful adaptation of the new organs. Her stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) involved a long and difficult recovery period, during which she slowly regained the muscle strength to sit, stand, and walk again.

Now, several weeks post-surgery, Ms. Kavitha has returned to a normal lifestyle, independently caring for herself and her two daughters. Her latest biopsy results confirm excellent graft function. While she will need lifelong immunosuppressant medication, her quality of life has drastically improved.

A Message of Awareness and Gratitude

This case highlights not just the surgical excellence at Rela Hospital but also the importance of early detectionorgan donation, and awareness about lung transplantation.

“Many patients and families are unaware that lung transplantation is a life-saving option in end-stage lung disease,” said Dr. Mohamed Rela, Chairman of Rela Hospital. “Organ donation gives patients a second chance at life, and success stories like this one show what's possible when awareness, expertise, and compassion come together.”

Ms. Kavitha’s story stands as a symbol of hope, determination, and the transformative power of organ donation.
