At Rela Hospital, Chromepet, Chennai, a 44-year-old woman named Kavitha, who had been bedridden and dependent on oxygen support for over 2 years, received a successful double lung transplant. This life-saving procedure not only restored her breathing ability but also prevented further heart failure, giving a new lease of life to this mother of two.
The surgery was led by Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, Director of Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery and Senior Consultant at Rela Hospital and Dr. Senthil Kumar D, Clinical Lead of Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery and Senior Consultant at Rela Hospital, along with Dr. Aishwarya Rajkumar, Transplant Pulmonologist. An expert multidisciplinary team performed the 8-hour-long surgery, which was declared a great success. Dr. Mohamed Rela later confirmed that the patient was recovering well.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Mohamed Rela, Chairman of Rela Hospital, shared that both lungs of the patient had failed, and the deteriorating lung function was also beginning to affect her heart. Despite this critical condition, the team successfully performed a double lung transplant, saving the patient before her heart condition worsened.
He congratulated and expressed gratitude to the entire team of doctors, nurses, and medical technicians who were involved in the complex surgery and postoperative care.
The patient’s family members shared their emotional gratitude and issued a public message:
“Shortness of breath should not be taken lightly. We ignored it for too long, thinking it was normal. People should consult a doctor immediately when they experience such symptoms.”
They also extended heartfelt thanks to the organ donor’s family and the Government of Tamil Nadu for their support. They emphasized the need for greater public awareness about lung diseases and organ donation.
Rela Hospital, once again, stands out for its excellence in high-end transplant care and continues to make landmark achievements in lung and heart surgeries in Tamil Nadu and across India.
