At Rela Hospital, Chromepet, Chennai, a 44-year-old female patient who was confined to bed and under oxygen support for more than two years has become able to breathe independently after undergoing successful double lung transplantation. The successful procedure saved the mother of two from further heart complications and gave her a new lease of life.
The double lung transplant surgery was performed by Dr. Srinath Vijayasekharan, Director of Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery and Senior Consultant, Rela Hospital and Dr. Senthil Kumar D, Clinical Lead of Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery and Senior Consultant, Rela Hospital. An expert medical team of doctors conducted an 8 hour long procedure and declared the operation a success. Later Dr. Mohamed Rela stated that the patient is recovering well.
Dr. Mohamed Rela, Chairman of Rela Hospital, addressing the media said that both the lungs of the patient had failed and the declining lung function had impacted the heart. He added that despite the complexities involved, the team of doctors performed a double lung transplant to save the patient’s life before her heart failed.
Earlier he thanked and appreciated the efforts of the entire team of doctors, nurses, and medical technicians performing the complex surgery and took care of him during his treatment.
The patient’s family members thanked the hospital and the government of Tamil Nadu for saving their beloved daughter. They appealed to the general masses to take proper care of their health and not to ignore minor lung ailments. In addition, they expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the donor’s family for donating the organs.
