The Senior Cardiac Surgical Staff Nurse is a highly skilled and experienced registered nurse who provides expert clinical care to patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, this role involves pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, recovery, and outcomes. The senior nurse also serves as a mentor, clinical leader, and resource for junior staff, while actively participating in service development and quality improvement initiatives.
Deliver high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to cardiac surgical patients in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment (e.g., cardiothoracic ward, HDU, or ITU).
Monitor and assess patients' clinical conditions, responding effectively to emergencies and changes in status.
Administer and manage complex medications, drips, and post-operative interventions such as chest drains, central lines, and pacing wires.
Collaborate with the cardiac surgical team, anesthetists, intensivists, and allied health professionals to ensure coordinated care.
Provide leadership and support to nursing staff, including supervision, delegation, and mentoring of junior nurses and students.
Participate in ward management responsibilities including shift coordination, patient flow management, and resource allocation.
Actively engage in clinical audits, infection control practices, and quality improvement projects to enhance patient outcomes.
Educate patients and their families regarding procedures, recovery expectations, discharge planning, and lifestyle adjustments.
Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough clinical documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
