"From Fear to Freedom" – How a 58-Year-Old Woman Overcame Her Doubts and Underwent Life-Changing Heart Surgery

A 58-year-old homemaker and mother from Chennai, had always lived a quiet, content life. But over the past year, things began to change. She found herself becoming breathless while walking short distances, experiencing fatigue even during simple household chores, and feeling a strange pressure in her chest.

A visit to her cardiologist revealed the reason: she was suffering from severe mitral and aortic valve disease, a life-threatening condition that was slowly weakening her heart. The recommendation was clear—double valve replacement surgery.

But for her, the word “open-heart surgery” brought instant fear. She hesitated. She worried about the risks, the recovery, the pain. “Am I too old for this? Will I survive? What if something goes wrong?” she asked her family with tears in her eyes.

Her condition, however, was progressing. Waiting any longer would endanger her life. That’s when her cardiologist referred her to Dr. Srinath and Dr. Senthil Kumar at Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre, Chennai, a renowned cardiac surgeons known for handling complex and high-risk cases.

At her first consultation, Dr. Srinath and Dr. Senthil Kumar patiently listened to her concerns. They explained the procedure in simple language, reassured her about the surgical plan, and more importantly, treated her like family.

With her fears calmed and trust built, Mrs. XXYYZZ made her decision: “If I must do this, I want it to be with you.”

The surgical team performed a successful double valve replacement, carefully replacing both the diseased mitral and aortic valves. The surgery took several hours and was executed with precision and care.

The post-operative care team monitored her closely. Within days, she  was sitting up, talking, and slowly regaining strength.

Today, weeks after her surgery, she is back home, walking without breathlessness, laughing with her grandchildren, and embracing a life she thought she might lose.

She now tells others facing similar fears: “Don’t be afraid. I was, too. But I’m alive today because I took that step—and because two amazing doctors guided me through it.”

Her journey from fear to recovery is a shining example of how expert care, compassionate communication, and trust in the medical team can lead to life-saving outcomes.

Thanks to Dr. Srinath and Dr. Senthil Kumar and also Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre, she didn’t just undergo heart surgery—she got her life back.
